Come join Shpilkis and m9 at the Parliament tavern at 9:30 pm on Friday, October 4th as we celebrate the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, with both Klezmer and Romani music, as well as dancing, and free homemade challah. Traditionally, the new year is welcomed with the blast of a shofar, a traditional Jewish intstrument made from a ram’s horn. We’ll be using modern horns instead about fifteen of them between the two bands.

Founded in 2013, The m9 (pronounced The minor 9) draws inspiration from high-energy brass bands from across the globe to create a unique soundscape where East and West collide. The new global fusion sounds of the rich Balkan Romani brass tradition form the core of a repertoire which excites, invigorates, and inspires curiosity about one of Europe’s most misunderstood minorities.

Shpilkis is a seven piece, all-horn Klezmer ensemble traditional enough to warm your bubbe’s kishkes but with some modern twists and turns to warm yours as well. The name Shpilkis translates roughly to “on pins and needles” or the excitement you’ll be feeling as you bump tucheses (booties) in front of a wall of horns.

We sincerely hope you’ll join us in welcoming the new year.
